How Much Does a Logo Design Cost? 2024 Price Guide

logo design pricing

It communicates the company’s identity and what it stands for, making it a key element in shaping the overall brand image. The other consideration with low-cost options is that you won’t be working personally with a designer. Some vendors charge $0, and celebrity designers can charge millions. It all depends on how deep your pockets are and what your priorities are. You can also make that cost cheaper by taking the time to visualize what you want the logo to represent. Nike’s logo was designed for as little as $35, thanks to Phil Knight’s vision.

Combination of human design and AI tools

Read our article on logo design cost to find out what you can expect at each price point. ManyPixels can help you create beautiful logos and branding projects. There are several platforms you can look to hire freelance graphic designers, such as Fiverr, Upwork, Dribble, Behance, and PeoplePerHour. You might not like any of the design suggestions by the contesters.

How much does a logo cost if done by a design firm?

logo design pricing

There are several considerations when determining the right price for your logo design. Consider your budget, research competitors in your industry, evaluate designer portfolios and discuss specific requirements with potential designers. Considering these factors, you can make an informed decision and choose a price that aligns with your budget and brand requirements. The number of revisions required during the design process also impacts final pricing.

How Much Does a Logo Design Cost?

The best part about hiring a remote freelance designer through Fiverr is that you can access a vast network of professionals to find the designer that is right for you. You can match your budget to the tier to get the results you want for the price you prefer to pay. When it comes to logo design and branding, experienced brand designers usually charge around $3,000 and this can go up to $10,000+ depending on their overall experience.

The pros of using DIY logo makers include affordability, ease of use, and the ability to customize the logo to suit the brand’s unique identity. Typically, a full brand redesign with a professional firm or agency falls into the range of $25,000 to $100,000. This often includes strategy and brand and identity design (including a logo). With logo template generators or tools, you almost create a design yourself.

Branding and logo design packages from a small design studio cost $2,500 to $10,000+. A complete branding strategy and design package from a high-end design agency costs $25,000 to $100,000+. Design agencies provide the services of an entire creative team, including a creative director and marketing specialists. Ensuring full legal copyright also allows brands to use their logos freely for marketing/promotional purposes while protecting themselves against potential copyright issues. Midrange logo design options cost anywhere from $500-$2500, giving you more customisation and expertise than low-cost alternatives. Examples include working with freelance designers or participating in design contests where you get more choices regarding designs and customisations.

Low-Cost Options for Logo Design

Bridge the gap between the types of client work you’re getting and the types of clients you dream of with a strategic body of work and lead generation plan. But you need to remember that you’re in the problem solving business and the work you’re doing is important to the success of this client’s business. For each low-paying client you say yes to, you’re saying no to opportunities that could really change the trajectory of your business. You’ll then want to ask if their budget will work with your price range.

Don’t be offended by clients with low budgets but also don’t feel guilty about charging what you’re worth and saying no. A potential client won’t have the budget to hire you at your minimum level of engagement. Ask for a percentage of new clients’ revenue for a time-period and do the job for free. This is no risk to the client- but after hearing this proposal they might just be thinking twice about rejecting your initial pricing.

We have listed the different methods below with an indication of their cost. Design agencies have the resources and expertise to handle complex branding projects, ensuring your logo aligns with your brand strategy. They often provide other services like brand guidelines or broader brand identity work. The price of creating a logo can differ significantly based on multiple factors, such as the designer's experience, design difficulty, and the amount of customisation required.

A client provides a brief, the designer gets to work, and "boom" - a logo is born. Although they may look like any other piece of graphic design, logos require a lot more work, skill, and effort to produce. There are many online platforms where you can create a logo for yourself, such as Canva, Looka, and Tailor Brands. Or you can use popular design software, but they usually have a learning curve. If you’re a trained designer and know your way around Illustrator well, there ya go. This enables them to deliver exceptional designs that effectively communicate a brand's identity and resonate with the target audience.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer, as logo design pricing can vary greatly depending on your experience, the project scope, the client's budget, and the deliverables included. However, a good starting point for freelance logo designers is to charge between £300 and £2,500 for a basic logo design package. Some professional designers charge a set rate for logo design once they ascertain the scope of a client's needs and goals. The larger the scope of the logo design project, the higher the overall cost.

You not only get paid for asking questions, but it's also a big opportunity for you to establish trust, which often leads to a bigger design project. Clients usually don’t want to take anything off the list and they will most likely end up paying the full price anyways. They usually also need brand guidelines describing how to use that logo, brand colors and typefaces. Designer who don't know how to handle clients who ask for endless revisions or extra deliverables (without revising the quote). My minimum rate is just there to remind me that I can't take on projects for less than that $12k, no matter what.

There is some overlap with contemporary house plans with our modern house plan collection featuring those plans that push the envelope in a visually forward-thinking way. Spanish architecture, just like others, is not just about structures and these are not just physically built but it also is a means of communication. Community values are mirrored within the Spanish architecture like houses of worship for Christians, Muslims or Jews. This is information to us about the people’s movement, who took their architectural traditions with them in the form structures like temples. This style also shows the political impact, which gave rise to castles and palaces.

Many of its buildings were used in generations given all the extensions and additions in years which is why antiquity is visible. Tuscan architecture is rustic yet stylish and is mainly suitable to its original Mediterranean arrangements. Tudor architectural style was the medieval architecture’s final development during the period of Tudor in 1485 to 1603. During this time was also the tentative introduction of England’s Renaissance architecture. Hence, the Tudor period may have structurally flourished around 1500 and 1560 following the Late Gothic Perpendicular style and was outdated by Elizabethan architecture in 1560. Southwestern architecture is unique and simple and is the region’s representation.

Located in the Venice neighborhood, the Yin-Yang House was made as a net-zero energy, single-family home. Doubling as both a calm retreat and a social space for entertaining, the residence was organized around a series of courtyards and outdoor spaces. The Painted Ladies of San Francisco are some of the most famous Victorian style homes in a city known for them. We've recently passed the halfway point of 2020, and to date, we've published hundreds of residential projects featuring distinct ways of living on ArchDaily.

Greek Revival

Inspired by Italian villas, these types of homes typically feature ground-level front porches supported by narrowly spaced columns. Modern and contemporary houses still have a stronghold on new construction, but many traditional types of homes are holding fast. Below, we’ve compiled an overview of the most popular home styles in the US today. FYI, architectural styles are one of two ways to classify the type of house it is.

Some other proponents are John Storrs, Saul Zaik, Van Evera, Pietro Belluschi and Herman Brookman. Craftsman, is yet another different architectural style formally known as the American Arts and Crafts movement, which is a local American architecture that started in the 19th century and retained its popularity until 1930. It all rooted from the comprehensive design and art movement in the Industrial Revolution. This was a battle of preserving the high value of handmade products and some other natural materials.

As the Pasadena Showcase House of Design enters its 59th year, it’s returning to a familiar setting. The Potter Daniels Manor, the English Tudor Revival–style residence that hosted the 1975 and 1996 showcase houses, has been reimagined with 30 new interior and exterior spaces for the 2024 edition, which is now open until May 19. Designed by architect Richard Meier, this complex occupies an entire hilltop just off fabled Sunset Blvd. We think it's one of the greatest outdoor spaces in Southern California, with the architecture eclipsing the collection it houses. But some who later rose to stardom tried out their ideas on small residential projects early in their careers, while others have created houses for themselves, their friends or clients at the peak of their powers. The traditional style of housing was somehow considered to be alike with the tudor house plan styled architecture.

L.A. Residential: 10 Contemporary Homes Across the City of Angels

It saw its heyday in the American colonies from the 18th century through the Revolutionary War and was heavily influenced by Renaissance design. These types of houses are characterized by their rigid symmetry—think windows and front doors evenly lined up and spaced, with rows of windows breaking up a flat façade. Typically expressed in red brick structures with hip roofs, these types of homes rarely feature excess decoration and have restrained exteriors. The concrete base and full height masonry walls serve to create a material language of visual mass and permanence for the home. The masonry walls and deeply raked mortar joints are highly textured, countering the smooth finished concrete surfaces and lime painted walls. Materials that are low maintenance and that get better with age were very important from the outset of the project.

In 2021 we published more than 3,800 projects, featuring houses from different regions of the world and offering a variety of solutions, materials, contexts, environments, scales, and typologies. Providing a broad source of inspiration for those seeking references for their own residential project. They are best when you are having a vacation and want to have a place near water or even in highland areas. “When I built in steel, what you saw was what you got,” the plain-spoken Koenig once said. What Buck and Carlotta Stahl got when they drove up to Woods Drive in 1954 was more than they ever envisioned.

Designer Mark Hermogeno paid tribute to Silver Queen Susanna Bransford Emery-Holmes in the kitchen, butler’s pantry, family room, powder room, and mudroom. “We had thought, What if she actually came back to life and asked us to remodel the space? “We wanted to concentrate on polished nickels and polished chromes to get that silver feel back in,” he says of the fixtures, hardware, and lighting by Kohler and Kallista. Hermogeno and designer Lynette Chin brought in a mix of vintage and new furnishings in the family room, incorporating performance fabrics for durability.

The Chemosphere House designed by the architect John Lautner for Nouard Gootgeld. Its minimalist style and linear design elements connect with the grid of Los Angeles streets which can be seen from the windows. Initially a temporary structure designed by Lloyd Wright, the nested quarter-spheres form a fitting backdrop for the caliber of artists who perform on its stage. An excellent example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture, Gamble House was designed in 1908 by Charles and Henry Greene for David and Mary Gamble (Procter and Gamble). Architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue designed it to in the style of ancient Egypt. In the early 1990s, it was expanded in what renovation architect Norman Pfeiffer called "Modernist/Beaux Arts style."

Nestled in the picturesque Montauk, New York, the Hither Hills residence by Martin Architects showcases a remarkable integration of architecture and nature. This 2022 project exemplifies a masterful balance, where engineered and natural materials come together to create a cohesive and captivating living experience. Ask a child to draw a neighborhood, and they’ll likely offer an image of a squares with a triangles on top, not doodles of round houses. Though walls with right angles and pitched roofs may be the most common archetype when it comes to residences, circular homes are arguably more interesting, simply because of how unique they are. Round design stretches back centuries—think igloos, teepees, and yurts—and the designs of many historic cultures are often based on circular forms.

The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12. Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee.

The site offers unique access to the sky and light for this heavily wooded part of the Kitsap Peninsula. The roof becomes an additional level for more occupiable outdoor space and areas for an elevated herb garden. The house was structured to support a second story along the north section if future expansion is needed. Areas of the site were thoughtfully zoned and the placement of the structure carefully considered to maximize space for growing vegetables, a future shop/guest house, firepit gatherings, and star-gazing from the roof terrace.

Her seminal E-1027 house in the south of France was her first major project, and is another important example of the international style. Irish architect Eileen Gray was a major figure in the early modernist movement, whose significance was only fully appreciated after her death in 1976. The influential 20th-century modernist Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is among the world's best-known architects. While the name seems severe and dark, it’s actually majestic and soaring. The Greystone Inn and Lakeside Cottage on the Lake are among the prominent historical structures on the mountains.

He also designed a number of houses, the best-known of which is the top-heavy Villa Savoye in northern France, built in 1931 as a holiday home for the Savoye family. The Secular Retreat house was Zumthor's first permanent building in the UK, a holiday home designed to celebrate the Devon landscape like the villas of his hero, Italian architect Andrea Palladio. The Navarre location is the newest after opening in 2018, and the beach backyard is meant to be enjoyed to the fullest, with fresh cocktails, craft beer and games. Shaggy’s Pensacola Beach is a laid-back waterfront bar and grill that offers a seafood-centric menu, frozen daiquiris, an extensive craft beer list and more.

The restaurant is positioned on the Navarre Beach fishing pier that spans 1,545 feet long and stands 30 feet above the water, perfect for securing a sunset view. Drift offers a casual fine dining experience from the second story of the building that also houses the Casino Beach Bar and Grille, one of its sister restaurants. The more upscale establishment offers a beautiful, panoramic view of the Gulf of Mexico. Their dishes are meticulously prepared with mostly locally-sourced ingredients that pay homage to the best of what Pensacola Beach has to offer, with healthy alternatives to fresh land and sea plating.

Calvert's in the Heights bills itself as a one-of-a-kind English-themed restaurant, and while it's not quite on the water, it sits on Scenic Highway and offers a unique, elevated view of the Pensacola Bay. The view isn't the only thing to take in, the outside dining area out back has cornhole and kids games. There are a huge number of restaurants that offer breathtaking waterfront views in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. You don't need to sit out on the patio to catch a sweltering Gulf of Mexico sunset, thanks to the window-heavy design of the Beach House Social dining room.

There’s also a chile catalog on Roger’s Garden’s website where people can study up before coming in to peruse the peppers. Roger’s Gardens rewards members will also enjoy exclusive offers and can enter for a chance to win a $500 gift card if they buy gardening products during Peppermania. The restaurant is probably Pensacola Beach’s fanciest restaurant but you don’t need to leave your flip-flops at home to enjoy the view. Overlooking Pensacola Bay, diners can get a glimpse of the sun as it sets behind Blue Wahoos Stadium, right at the end of South Palafox Street.

The Fish House's upscale dockside dining experience overlooking Pensacola Bay and Seville Harbor isn't one to be forgotten. Heather Thomas, the city administrator for Snohomish, told KING 5 by phone that without a permit, the restaurant is not in compliance with city requirements and international building code. And if pepper enthusiasts want to get a jump start on New Mexico chile harvest season, Peppermania also offers pots of Hatch and Big Jim peppers.

Established in 1964, the Flora-Bama Lounge is known beyond Florida as one of the top beach bars and is uniquely located on the Alabama-Florida line between Orange Beach and Perdido Key. The restaurant has five stages for live music, several beachfront bars and, of course, spectacular views of the Gulf. While Atlas Oyster House is The Fish House's sister restaurant, shared deck with a waterfront view and all, executive chef Jason Hughes has transformed the menu to make the restaurant a destination of its own. At Atlas, you can expect to see creative, off-the wall options, like Bloody Mary oyster shooters and Maine lobster corn dogs. But Atlas isn't just for the seafood lovers, as you don't want to miss the bourbon barbecue Clarke County Cookout Cheeseburger.

It’s located in the second floor of Hilton Pensacola Beach and offers a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico. The restaurant focuses on offering unique flavors using the finest in-season ingredients available. Juana's is Navarre's oldest family owned restaurant and bar, and is still a favorite hangout spot for locals and tourists alike. At Juana's, you can dance to live music, play a game of sand volleyball and take a ride on a jet ski all in one day. There are plenty of areas to overlook the Santa Rosa Sound, whether it be on the Sailors' Grill deck or the climate-controlled Schooner Bar.

What is your design philosophy? And other creative lessons from Adam by Kai Wong Medium

design is philosophy

Be trustworthy and credible – identify yourself through your design to assure users and eliminate the uncertainty. Focus on emotion – the pleasure of use is as vital as ease of use; arouse users’ passion for increasing engagement. Offer few options – don’t hinder users with nice-to-haves; give them needed alternatives instead. This has been the philosophy of everyone from Jonathan Ive and Stefan Sagemeister to Diego Armani and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The more ‘essential’ you can make a product — that is, the less designed you can make it appear — the more you’ve succeeded. The great designer Charles Eames liked to say, “take your pleasures seriously!

“Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness.” by Frank Gehry

Earnings per share (EPS) fell well short of the $1.34 forecast, coming in at $1.17, a decrease from $1.29 in the year-ago quarter. Despite these mixed results, the quarter's performance showed notable instances of resilience and growth. News from Dezeen Events Guide, a listings guide covering the leading design-related events taking place around the world.

Victory Starts With Philosophy

I believe the only guarantor for a design is the designer or design team themselves. As is so, I believe designers must also take complete responsibility for their outcomes. Long-time Industrial Designer, Dieter created his first product in 1955 for Braun. He has inspired a generation of designers with his design philosophy ‘function over form’. His designs are driven by the purpose of the object, rather than its aesthetics – seeking to achieve design purity through reduction and restraint.

As user experience guru Jakob Nielsen tells us, ‘designers are not users’ and they shouldn’t rely on their assumptions of what the user wants or needs. To avoid designing with bias and really improve the user experience, designers need to get to know their users. With Justinmind’s prototyping tool, you can use our Sketching UI kit to create a static wireframe with basic elements. If you can’t interview actual users, talk to customer-facing teams like Sales and Support to hear the trends they’re seeing in real time and gather anecdotes that you can share with executives and stakeholders.

As Wennberg, et al (2018), argue, the idea of “intuitive” has become a catch-all for at least 6 different secondary meanings (natural, familiarity, easy-to-learn, simplistic, instinctive, and non-conscious processing). With this plurality in mind, I seek out the underlying, specific, situated, moral ontologies of my users whenever I can and to the best of my available resources. There are limitations; at times I may only have the ability to interpret Google Analytics, heat-maps of sites, or feedback from A/B testing. However, these sorts of quantitative metrics can only tell me the traces of behaviors, not the underlying “why,” not the core of my users’ behaviors.

Design concepts are influenced by design philosophies, providing a way to apply the overarching principles to practical design solutions. They are like the tools and techniques employed within a broader philosophical framework, allowing designers to bring their vision to life. These examples illustrate how design philosophies shape the approach and outcome of design projects. By studying the philosophies of these influential designers, we gain insights into how their ideas and values have influenced their iconic creations. Anytime I design, I must acknowledge that the stakeholders who I privilege as being my intended users will perceive my design as “good” or “virtuous” (if successful). Perform user testing to find out how your target users think about the product and to optimize it accordingly.

Make sure you test with real users so that you can ensure that your vision matches the market reality and that you are designing solutions for your target audience. With this volume we present 24 contributions to the philosophy of design. Design is an emerging topic in philosophy and not yet one on which work is shaped by a common set of questions or by an academically entrenched discipline of philosophy of design. We therefore consider it an effort in itself that we can present 24 contributions. Throughout the years we have approached in our careers design from our separate disciplinary perspectives and probed whether design was becoming a more general topic of philosophical reflection. One of us (Pieter) is working in a philosophy department and analyzed design as part of a larger project within the philosophy of technology.

design is philosophy

It guides viewers' eyes, ensuring they focus on primary information first, followed by secondary and tertiary details. Designers establish a visual hierarchy by employing size, contrast, color, and spacing, directing attention and aiding comprehension. Secondly, a design philosophy can differentiate you from other designers. In a sea of creatives, your unique philosophy can serve as your signature style, making you more memorable and attractive to clients who share your values. For instance, if your design philosophy is rooted in sustainable practices, you'll appeal to environmentally-conscious clients. When you articulate your beliefs about design, clients gain insight into how you approach projects.

What are design principles?

Additionally, we're seeing a shift towards a more inclusive design philosophy. Designers are beginning to understand that good design must cater to all users, regardless of their age, ability, or culture. This means designing products that are accessible and user-friendly for everyone—this is the philosophy of 'Universal Design'. Moreover, with the advancement of artificial intelligence and machine learning, design philosophy will need to adapt. These are questions that will shape the philosophy of design in the tech industry.

Storytelling is a powerful tool for connecting with others and making your philosophy relatable. Use anecdotes, case studies, and personal experiences to illustrate how your philosophy has influenced your design work and the impact it has had. Design philosophy is not a static entity; it should develop as you grow as a designer and as the world around you changes. At some stage, you may come to terms with the fact that your designs may not be as important or impactful as you once thought they were. In essence, the philosophy of the Constitution transcends mere legalities; it embodies a moral vision that shapes the trajectory of Indian democracy. The framers of the Constitution intended it to facilitate democratic transformation and empower historically disadvantaged groups.

“Success” can be ambiguous, so getting clear on what that means is critical to keeping everyone aligned and achieving your goals. The subtractive mix of colours in paint and print produces the CMYK colour system. The additive mix of colours on digital screens produces the RGB colour system. A design with a high contrast of values (i.e., one which makes use of light and dark values) creates a sense of clarity, while a design with similar values creates a sense of subtlety. We can also use value to simulate volume in 2D, for instance, by using lighter values where the light hits the object and darker values for shadows.

The app icon designs in iOS 6 and earlier mimic the glossy texture of glass to incite users to tap them. Later, Apple (in)famously introduced a linen fabric texture to much of its user interface. We tend to identify objects by their basic shapes, and only focus on the details (such as lines, values, colours and textures) on closer inspection. For this reason, shapes are crucial elements that we designers use for quick and effective communication. Hierarchy in design refers to the arrangement of elements in a way that signifies importance.

By establishing a set of principles and beliefs, designers are encouraged to think beyond the conventional and explore new possibilities. It fuels creativity and encourages experimentation, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in design. Whether in Segovia, in Madrid or on our global online campus, IE School of Architecture and Design offers the latest tech for experimentation, production and the testing of ideas. But it’s also where creative minds from different disciplines meet to collaborate. Where the IE Community reaches out to the wider community to provide real solutions for future challenges at all scales. Jonathan Ive is a designer of Apple who worked on the iPod, iPhone, and iPad designs.

It goes beyond the surface level and dives deep into the purpose and values that drive the design process. Design philosophy encompasses the broader vision and perspective behind a design, shaping its form, function, and overall experience. It is the compass that guides designers in making choices, resolving challenges, and creating meaningful solutions. Within design philosophy, various elements intertwine to form a cohesive framework that defines the essence of a design.

In the first year, newcomers fall in love with the island and its charms – everything is new and exciting. In the second year, people get ‘down to it’, learn to cope with the weather and ferries, with all the normal island ways of life.

However, the original recordings, made on early portable recording devices, remain in Canna House... On top of their beckoning colors, canna lilies are also easy for hummingbirds to access because they can grow up to 8 feet tall! For the same reason that many gardeners hang hummingbird feeders high above the ground, taller flowers do a good job of attracting these winged wonders. Their height makes them easier to see and easier to drink from during a long day of flying. It's easy to make the assumption that hummingbirds love all flowers, especially those with vibrant colors.

If you'd like to turn your yard into a hummingbird oasis, growing canna lilies is an excellent step. Their trumpet-shaped petals and stunning range of colors add visual interest to the garden on top of benefitting pollinators like hummingbirds. Wait until the threat of frost has passed to plant canna lily rhizomes directly in the ground, or start them indoors in advance. Finally, canna lilies are attractive to hummingbirds because of their high nectar content.

Although Canna House is not an architecturally unique building, the collection it holds is of international importance. Engaging with our community is an important part of the work the Trust does on the island. As well as working on creating partnerships with the Isle of Canna Community Development Trust for island infrastructure projects, we have delivered several practical projects that the whole community have enjoyed as well as visitors. I am fortunate that I can combine my performing abilities with my archive promotion work, and consequently I’ve been able to undertake many presentations, song lectures, concerts and gallery presentations, all using both the visual and aural archives. I have presented in the US, Canada, Ireland and Lithuania, and was due to present again in the US this summer. All of these activities have been funded through externally sought funding programmes so they do not place a burden on National Trust for Scotland resources.

canna house

Canna House was built around 1863 by Donald Macneil, the owner of the island at that time. He was persuaded to build the house by his wife, after she had returned from visiting wealthy relatives in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove and thought that they deserved a house of similar stature and comfort. The house and the island were then sold to Robert Thom, a shipowner from Greenock, in 1881. He lived there with his extensive family until he sold the island to John Lorne Campbell in 1938. Canna House and its contents, the garden, its flower borders, orchards and paths, are testimony not just to the lives of two people who are now gone, but also to the promise of a future. I think of Canna House as an intimate museum – not a shrine, but a place to come and celebrate a special sensitivity to beauty, music and a wonderful sense of fun.

Our mission is to deliver the largest selection and value of curated, high-quality cannabis products in a welcoming and modern environment. We believe in the life changing power of  cannabis  and we’re here to lead the way. John Lorne Campbell and his wife Margaret Fay Shaw were both fascinated by folklore and ancient culture and language, especially Gaelic, and during their lifetimes collected – and indeed created - an enormous amount of information of historical importance. The Canna House archivist Fiona Mackenzie is very happy to help visitors with information on the archives and collections and here, retired  archivist Magda Sagarzazu,a personal friend of the Campbell's introduces the Canna House archives. We believe that responsible and educated cannabis consumption plays a vital role in promoting a safe and inclusive community. As the Garden State embraces the end of cannabis prohibition, it’s crucial for consumers to be well-informed about product choices, proper dosages, the different methods of consumption, and more.

The archives themselves are housed in a specially converted bedroom with a Hanwell EMS (environmental monitoring system) to alert us to any change in conditions that may be detrimental, particularly to paper collections. The ‘Butterfly Room’ which houses John’s precious Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) collection is similarly controlled, due to the fragile nature of the specimens there. John began collecting butterflies when he was 14, on his father’s estate in Argyll, and never lost his love for them, notating meticulously the environmental conditions when the specimens were collected. John and his wife, American musician Margaret Fay Shaw, lived there until their respective deaths in 1996 and 2004.

“They were interested in politics and psychology, but they also had personal interests - they loved cats and there are a huge number of books about cats,” Indigo adds. The vast range of items in the home reveal much about the couple’s individual personalities  – from Campbell’s butterfly and moth collections to his wife’s hoard of show New York show programmes and concert fliers found in an old battered ladies’ suitcase. According to Indigo Carnie, the Trust’s Collections Care Manager on Canna, every corner of Canna House tells a story of the couple’s interests and lives, while the scale of the project was breathtaking. Edinburgh-born John Lorne Campbell became interested in island heritage and culture after overhearing a conversation in Gaelic which inspired him to read rural economics and Celtic studies at St. John’s College, Oxford. It takes a special kind of person to live and work here, but the opportunity to do so is one which has been an incredible gift as well as a challenge. As the only member of staff in Canna House, it was up to me to keep the house presentable, clean, condition-monitored and alive. The house was closed to the public while preparations for an extensive renovation project were worked upon, and so I had to develop ways of taking the archives out to visitors and researchers, raising the profile of the significance of the collections. It’s important to say that this could not have been carried out without the core of hard work and commitment undertaken by Magda over the previous 20 years. As a close friend and companion of John and Margaret Campbell, she is indeed ‘the Keeper of the Flame’.
