Canna House was built around 1863 by Donald Macneil, the owner of the island at that time. He was persuaded to build the house by his wife, after she had returned from visiting wealthy relatives in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove and thought that they deserved a house of similar stature and comfort. The house and the island were then sold to Robert Thom, a shipowner from Greenock, in 1881. He lived there with his extensive family until he sold the island to John Lorne Campbell in 1938. Canna House and its contents, the garden, its flower borders, orchards and paths, are testimony not just to the lives of two people who are now gone, but also to the promise of a future. I think of Canna House as an intimate museum – not a shrine, but a place to come and celebrate a special sensitivity to beauty, music and a wonderful sense of fun.

It will eventually see Canna House fully open to visitors for the first time next year, as a new visitor attraction that will tell the inspiring story of the couple and their contribution to preserving Gaelic culture and heritage. Whilst I have been working on the awareness programme, continuing the archive work and answering research enquiries, conservation and reparation work has been continuing in Canna House. Wallpaper conservation, structural surveys, garden work, new plumbing and interpretation plans have been developed.
